Since its humble beginnings in 2011, the Burton Band Program has been educating students at Burton High School in the virtues of instrumental music.
What we offer
The Burton Band Program is comprised of an advanced band, an advanced percussion, and an intermediate band. Students may also choose to participate in Color Guard/Winter Guard and a competitive Percussion Ensemble. Being the only band program in the San Francisco Unified District that allows students to take band all four years of their high school career, the band program offers a rich music learning experience for all students through a meaningful and supportive culture that encourages and builds character and relationships.
Advanced Band - The Advanced Band is referred to as the marching band in the Fall and Symphonic Band in the Spring. This course is composed of students with at least 1 year of prior experience. The Advanced Band performances at various community events, school functions and sporting events, as well as state marching and concert festivals.
Advanced Percussion - For percussionists only with more than 1 year of experience. They focus on the percussive arts as well as percussion music for the marching band, symphonic band, and percussion ensemble.
Intermediate Band - This course is a beginning type course for students wanting to learn a new instrument and how to read music. Once they've gotten their one year of experience, they will move up to the Advanced Band.
Color Guard/Winter Gaurd - This is an after school activity that performs a show with a theme with the use of different colored and shaped flags, mock rifles, and sabres. In the Fall, the color guard is the visual aspect of the marching band. In the Spring, the Winter Gaurd designs and performs a show to their own music of their choosing and competes at Northern California competitions.
